Department of Mechanical Engineering-Sponsored Fellowships & Scholarships

If the deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, applications are due on the first following work day.

Selection Criteria is based on GRE scores, references, and academic achievement.  A completed application to the Department of Mechanical Engineering is required for all departmental fellowships. See below for additional requirements.

Academic Training Scholars (ATS)

Under this program promising Doctoral candidates, who intend to pursue academic careers are paired with mentor professors. These mentors supervise both their research and their training as an effective academic professor. During this time the candidates will pursue their academic studies, conduct a program of research, and participate in a significant curriculum development project.

Additional requirements: a statement of personal, teaching and research goals*

Award amount: $20,000 + tuition waiver.

Award duration: one year, not renewable.

Wayne Brown Scholarship

The Wayne Brown Scholarship is awarded to approximately 10 new graduate students in the College of Engineering each year. Only new Ph.D. applicants are eligible.

Additional requirements: a statement of personal and research goals*

Award amount: $20,000 + tuition waiver.

Award duration: one year, not renewable.

Campbell Fellowship

The Campbell Fellowship is awarded to new graduate students in Mechanical Engineering and Bioengineering. To be eligible for this fellowship, the candidate must be a native Utahn or be able to show strong ties to Utah.

Additional requirements: a statement of personal and research goals*

Award amount: $12,000 + tuition waiver.

Award duration: one year, not renewable.

University-Sponsored Fellowships & Scholarships

Graduate Research Fellowship

The Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF) is a one-year, non-renewable award by the University of Utah Graduate School. All full-time graduate students working toward a Ph.D. are eligible to apply. In order for an awardee to accept the GRF, s/he must have satisfactorily passed all preliminary and qualifying examinations prior to the previous Fall Semester. Fellows are expected to be engaged in full-time research or creative work during the academic year of the fellowship. Both domestic and international graduate students are eligible to apply.

Interested students must submit the completed application to the Scholarship and Fellowship Committee by December 10 for departmental ranking.

Award amount: $12,000 + tuition waiver.

Award duration: one year, not renewable.

IGERT Traineeship

The NSF IGERT program provides for generous support to encourage the brightest and best-qualified students to apply to the IGERT program. Funding is only available for U.S. citizens and permanent residents.
