Engineering Scholars Program
Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Engineering Scholars Program (ESP) students have a unique research opportunity to work with professors in the Department of Mechanical Engineering through Undergraduate Research Scholar (URS) Award. These traineeships provide ME Engineering Scholars who have completed their first year of study the opportunity to gain one year of part-time research training experience with a ME faculty member. URTs are an opportunity to learn more about research in the various areas of mechanical engineering, gain experience in potential areas of research interest and get a head start on the combined BS/MS, MS or Ph.D. degrees. ME Engineering Scholars automatically qualify for the program however, the ESP URS application must be filled out to help place students with ME faculty. URS students will be paid a wage of $9 per hour (for up to 400 hours). Non-ME Engineering Scholars do not automatically qualify for a URS but are still encouraged to apply.
Once a student is awarded a URS the following requirements must be met:
- A mechanical engineering faculty must be selected as a research project advisor before funding begins. Within 1 month of the award, a one-page research proposal must be submitted outlining the proposed work to do be done during the URT. The student’s research advisor and the ME URT Committee must approve the proposal.
- The student will present a poster at the Undergraduate Research Day poster competition. A cash award of $250 will be given to the best URT poster presentation.
Applications should be turned into Dona Holm in the ME Undergraduate Office Room 2220 MEB (801) 581-8977. Applications for each semester will not be reviewed before the last month of the previous semester. Applications will remain on file for the period of a year and will available for ME faculty to draw from for potential undergraduate research opportunities.
