Undergraduate Research Scholars (URS) Awards (URS)

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is now accepting applications for the Undergrad Research Scholars (URS) Award. URS provides ME undergrads with the opportunity to experience a year of part-time research training with a ME faculty member. This year, proposals addressing the broad area of sustainability are of particular interest.
URS is your chance to learn more about research in the various areas of mechanical engineering, gain experience in potential areas of research interest and get a head start on the combined BS/MS, MS or Ph.D. degrees.
URS students will be paid $600 per semester, up to $1200, with a 5 hour per week time commitment.
URS students will be chosen per the recommendation of the URS committee, based on:
- Feasibility and technical soundness of proposed research
- Potential impact of research to inspire future engineering research and development or new products
- Quality of research proposal
- Prospective influence on career and/or academic pathways
URS applicant requirements*:
- minimum GPA of 3.25
- intermediate status at the time of the award
- enrolled in an approved mechanical engineering course load (at least 12 credits)
*Engineering Scholar Program students automatically qualify and are required to submit an application.
Post-award, URS students must meet the following requirements:
- Select a mechanical engineering faculty as a research project advisor and within 1 month of the award, submit a one-page research proposal to be approved by the student’s research advisor and the ME URS Committee.
- Present a poster at the Undergraduate Research Day poster competition. A cash awards will be given to the top URS poster presentations.
