Problem Statement

The University of Utah solar car has a number of requirements for the steering system. The only component missing is the rack and pinion. With the use of the rack and pinion the demands will be met. These requirements are stated in the regulations for the American Solar Challenge.

Summary of Approach

First, all the measurements and calculations of the existing solar car were taken and evaluated to see if the frame and front suspension would allow for the turning radius. Second, was to design or buy a new rack and pinion that would be compatible.

Summary of Results

After completing all the measurements and calculations for the solar car, the frame and front suspension met all the standard requirements. The rack and pinion was purchased due to time restraints.

Lessons Learned

The safety of the driver and the car depends on the steering being stable; therefore, I learned that a complete and accurate steering system involves a lot of angles that need to be precisely calculated in order to remain stable at higher speeds.
