Design Refinement
The Initial QFD matrix greatly enhanced the ability to downsize the concepts generated by the mind map. From the Initial QFD, the top three ideas were:
Choice #1, Foot Pedal (Click Here to Go Back to Top)
The Foot Pedal was the best option according to the Initial QFD. It was the most conventional and had only two drawbacks for the Solar Car. The drawbacks were the limited space near the driver’s feet and the cost.
Choice #2, Dial Knob (Click Here to Go Back to Top)
The Dial Knob was ranked second in the Initial QFD; however, it is not very conventional. The reason this idea was not modeled was due to it being too unconventional and possibly counter-intuitive for the driver. Furthermore, the safety issue that is posed when wanting to decelerate; the knob would have to be turned not no simply released. Also, the knob could get stuck or come off resulting in a catastrophe. In emergency situations, this could be very dangerous.
Choice #3, Hand Lever (Click Here to Go Back to Top)
The Hand Lever is convenient. The parts were already available making it very inexpensive. Also, this idea could easily be modified into a pedal lever in the future. The Hand Lever, although ranked third, was currently the best choice with the option of integrating it into a pedal later.
