Problem Statement

The Emergency Release Snowboard Binding Team has the opportunity to build a mechanism that in the event of an avanlanche a snowboarder can immediatly release both feet from the snowboard. There are many different ways that this release can take place. I have explored one of the possible ways that this can be done. The is through the use of two disks or plates that have a mechanical connection between them that can be released.

Summary of Approach

The ERSB team is trying to design a mechanism that can release a snowboarder from the board. My approach to designing the release is thourgh the use of two separating disks. The idea is to have one disk or plate screwed to the board and another disk inside the binding securing the binding to the bottom disk. There are many different ways that the two disks can be held together. Some of the ideas to accomplish this included hinges, pins, slides, key, hooks, and clamps.

Summary of Results

The use of separating disks has positive and negative aspects toward the ERSB goal of creating a releasable snowboard binding. Initial ideas were taken and scored against each other to find the best ideas for concepts out of the separating disks ideas. The hinge plate design and the pin plate design were the two highest scoring ideas. The pros and cons for the two ideas show what parts of the concepts could be implemented into the final design.

Lessons Learned

The separating disk idea is one that has many positive traits that could be included into the final ERSB design. Each team member is working on different possible ways to accomplish the release of the snowboard, the positive aspects from all the team members final designs will be put together to make the best final ERSB design possible.
