Scope of Report

To attempt to reap the possible benefits of an electronic release, the task was set to research the possibility of using an electronically driven release method. The following pages are presented as a report on the results of the following tasks:

  • Exploration of possible electronic release methods
  • Exploration of potential power methods
  • Benchmarking of electronic releases currently employed
  • Concept generation of electronic releases
  • Concept selection of electronic releases
  • Design of a possible electronic release

Problem Statement

In the process of creating concepts for an emergency release snowboard binding, it became clear that an electronically driven release would provide many advantages to a mechanically driven release. Some of the benefits from an electronic release include:

  • Expansion of possible design options
  • Increased reliability
  • Improved universality

Several design challenges have to be considered for the use of an electronic release method. There are some customer needs that the electronic release itself must meet in order to be a feasible option in the project.

The potential benefits and design challenges are discussed in detail in this section.

Summary of Approach

In order to explore the possibility of an electronic release, the following approach was taken in the order listed:

  1. Concepts Brainstormed
  2. Selection Criteria Determined
  3. Concepts Researched
  4. Preliminary Concept Screening Performed
  5. Concepts Selected and Developed
  6. Final Concept Selected and Developed

The brainstormed concepts and selection criteria are presented and discussed in this section.

Summary of Results

After the initial concepts were brainstormed and a set of selection criteria was determined, general high-level concepts were researched to see if they could realistically be used in the design of the ERSB. The areas explored are the actuation methods and methods for producing the electrical power. After exploring the concepts, some ideas were abandoned and others refined to reflect what was discovered. From the surviving ideas, a concept selection was performed and the highest scoring ideas developed. This section discusses the results of this process.

Lessons Learned

A wide range of lessons were learned during the creation of this report. The most important of these lessons is the fact that using an electronic release is a feasible option for the activation of the ERSB release. Also important is the methods that are feasible for the electronic release of a snowboard.

Additional lessons learned include what future work needs to be done to further explore the use of an electronic release for the ERSB project.
