Problem Statement

The emergency release snowboard binding (ERSB) has not been sought out and researched by snowboard companies and there is no patent on the market. Therefore, it was necessary to start from scratch and to begin researching different ideas and concepts that could be useful in the effectiveness of what needs to be accomplished in order for this project to be successful. The ERSB itself is to be designed so that the rider when caught in an avalanche will be able to quickly release from the snowboard so that the snowboard will not act as an anchor therefore creating a greater chance of survival.

Summary of Approach

My emphasis was directed towards the design and development of the activation of the release mechanism for the emergency release snowboard bindings. This being a large factor in the production and the efficiency of the ERSB itself, brain mapping was used to decide what to focus on in order for the system to be complete and the release to be simultaneous. The brain mapping is shown below.

Summary of Results

With the different ways of activating the relase mechanism come pro’s and con’s of each, along with different results that each would provide. To evaluate these pro’s and con’s it was necessary to find out what the overall customer needs were. The team set up a survey on the web for people to take which would in return let us know what people wanted from an effective ERSB.

Lessons Learned

Throughout the course and the objective to design an efficient reliable way to activate the release mechanism of the emergency release snowboard binding, it was found that the grab handle with connecting cord was the best possible device for the task at hand.
