Problem Statement

The design of the Emergency Release Snowboard Binding (ERSB) is a innovative device. No design is currently marketed to accomplish the task of separating a snowboarder from their board. As part of the design for the ERSB separation is a primary concern. The device must completely separate the bindings from the snowboard in an effort to reduce the risk of injury or death in case of an emergency. Each binding must release instantaneously in an effort to reduce further injury to either leg. The design of a two-plate device is a hypothesis that will be considered as an option for the ERSB design.

Summary of Approach

There are several ways that the ERSB can separate the snowboard from the bindings. Brainstorming was used to develop several different possible two-plate designs for the analysis based on input from the team. A QFD matrix was also used to limit the number of possible designs.

Summary of Results

The designs taken from brainstorming exercises were matched up best against the customer needs collected from the summer survey. This ensured that the best preliminary designs would be used to ensure that the customer needs would be met. Two designs were chosen for analysis and modeling.

Lessons Learned

The two-plate design is a definite possibility for the ERSB to use as its design. Its only limiting criteria are the fact that it will give the snowboarder some unwanted lift from the snowboard to the bindings. There are many opportunities for improvement upon the current designs.
