Problem Statement

The Esk8 Team is designing a skateboard that is driven by an electric motor that has the ability to recharge itself. The skate’s deck is made of low-density foam wrapped in composite. The skate is designed to accommodate the electrical components within the deck. The skate will be lightweight with a goal weight of 35lbs. The skate will be able to carry a 200lb person up a 6% grade hill.

My part of the project was to design a clutch that would be integrated into a drive train that would be able to drive and coast freely. The clutch had to be lightweight and small.

Requirements

The clutch will need to have the following requirements:

  • Lightweight
  • Durable
  • Small in size
  • Able to assemly/disassemble easily
  • Dependable
  • Safe
  • Fast but powerful

Full description of requirements

Specifications

  • Durable enough to handle a 200 lb rider
  • Can handle speeds up to 15 mph
  • Resonable cost
  • Long life

Full description specifications

Downselect and Design Refinement

From the design matrix it was obvious to see that a sprag clutch with a chain would be the most logical solution. Click here to learn more details and view the design matrix.

Final Selection, Data, Assembly Drawing, and Calculations

Click here to see the final drawings and calculations for the sprag clutch.

Conclusion

The sprag clutch was used in the critical function protype and meet all of the requirements and specifications required for the drive train. (Click here to view full conclusion statement)
