At the inception of the Solar Car project, the team agreed that the car would be fabricated to meet the requirements for the American Solar Challenge. The official rule book for that race states:
- “Solar cars must have a method to clear at least 0.1 square meters of the windshield of rain. The clearing method must be operable at all times and must be in use when it becomes necessary to use the windshield wipers on the team’s support vehicles.”
In order to meet this requirement, a windshield wiping method must be devised for the unusual shape of the canopy of the University of Utah Solar Car. The most important things to consider when designing a windshield wiper for this particular car are:
- Electrical power is limited and its unnecessary use should be avioded
- The solar car’s canopy is an unusual shape so the wiper must have a means of maintaining contact with the canopy surface
