Summary of Problem Statement

Since the rules for the American Solar Challenge require that solar cars be equipped with a method of clearing the windshield of rain, the University of Utah Solar Car needed a windshield wiper.

Summary of Approach

First, I researched how windshield wipers in a regular car operate. Then, I generated a list of requirements to which a windshield wiper would have to conform in order to be compatible with the solar car. I developed several metrics by which to judge the concepts to be generated during brainstorming. Then, I brainstormed several concepts that would hopefully eliminate any dependence on electrical energy to power the wiper mechanism and allow the wiper to operate on the unusual shape of the canopy. The designs were then evaluated based on the metrics, and two designs were further developed.

Summary of Results

After further development, the design options were weighed again based on the most important characteristics. After a final design option was chosen, I developed the final design for the wiper.

Lessons Learned

I learned that although there are several possible solutions to a problem, there usually is a best solution for the particular situation to which a solution must be applied. I also learned about the design process and the several iterations and considerations that go into choosing the best design for a solution.
