Final Selection and Support
As a part of Lab 8, I was asked to identify the design that was the best for my application and further refine it to the point that it could be fabricated and implemented on the solar car. In order to do this, I first ranked the wipers against each other again, based on the same metrics as before. The design that received the best overall score was the long lever arm powered by the driver. To further justify the design, I evaluated the feasability of this design based on the force required from the driver for actuation. A picture of my calculations can be seen below.

This design would also be easier to make and implement, take up less space (which is scarce in the solar car), more cost effective, and would not drain from the elecrical power of the solar car. This design was clearly the better choice for the solar car’s windshield wiper. I further developed this design so that it can be implemented on the solar car, once we get to that point.
Assembly Drawing
An image of the engineering drawing I made of the final wiper assembly can be seen below.
