Do NOT email your labs to Professor Provancher, make arrangements with one of the TAs if you are not able to hand your lab in to the ME 4000 basket in the ME office. However, they are not obligated to do this for you, so tread lightly.

• Lab 2 has been posted.
  • Note that it is assumed that radius on the right and left sides of the part are 20mm and are centered on the right and left sides of the part respectively.
  • For lab 2, rather than modeling the example part in the assignmet, you are welcome to model a part that’s relavent to your project (with 2 caveats).
    1. The part you model must be as complex as the part on p. 2 of the assignment
    2. Please do something new, i.e., please don’t hand in a drawing you did freshman year. =)

• Lab 3: Sketching II
• This lab emphasizes:
  • More sketching and exploring your design project (including brainstorming).

• Lab 4

The purpose of Main/Lab4 is to give you practice with assemblies and drafting and to think about practicalities of designing mating parts. You will be reminded of the basics of fits and tolerances at the beginning of the lab session, but you can also refer back to the lecture given on this topic back in ME3910.

• Lab 5

This lab teaches two advanced modeling techniques - sweeps and blends. Both techniques are highly useful as they closely resemble manufacturing processes such as bending, forming, forging, etc.

• include a screen shot of your part’s feature hierarchy to show that the part was constructed via sweeps and blends.

• Lab 6
  • In Lab 6 you will take 2 or 3 of the most promising concepts that you sketched up for Lab 3 and create solide models and assemblies.
    • By drawing out these concepts in more detail and scaling them to the required size and using COTS parts with your assemblies it will help you to understand if your designs are feasible.
    • Provide a short writeup of the design & function of each concept
    • Formatted drawings of these are not required, screen shots are fine

• Lab 8

For Lab 8 you’ll show your design trade and final formated and toleranced assembly drawing of your individual design project, along with any supporting information you used to help make this decision.

  • This lab involves designing a hoist structure by producing stress and deflection results via FEA and comparing these results to analytical solutions.
