Details about update presentations

What to turn in and bring to the presentation:

1. Upload your presentation to your wiki site and email the link to your slides to Andy? () and Prof. Provancher () by 10AM at the latest the day you present.
   • Please include the names and email addresses of all your team members on the first page of your presentation to expedite contacting your group via email.
2. Bring copies of your slides to class for Andy and Prof. Provancher for us to give you feedback on.
3. Print out an evaluation form for each member of your team
   1. For the 1st presentation, these will go to Andy, after that they will go straight to the presenters.
4. Please upload your presentation and memo to your wikiSite and link them off the presentations page.

Presentation Guidelines:

• Follow the main guidelines found in Andy’s presentation from in class (Monday 8/28) for your presentation.
• Email a link to your presentation powerpoint slides to Andy Dohanos (Communications TA) and Dr. Provancher by 10AM on the day your group presents.
• 6–8 minutes for 1st presentation and 8–10 minutes for 2nd & 3rd presentation per group presentation (plus 2–4 minutes for questions)
• 3 Presenters maximum per presentation (though everyone must present during the semester)
• Everyone in each group must be present on the day of their team’s presentation, or receive an exception from Dr. Provancher in advance.

Whose evaluating who

• Team 3 will evaluate Team 1 (while Team 2 is setting up)
• Team 1 will evaluate Team 2 (while Team 3 is setting up)
• Team 2 will evaluate Team 3 (while Team 1 is helping pack up Andy’s laptop)

1. Can you offer any positive or constructive feedback regarding the presentations organization? (i.e. Intro, Body, Conclusion)
2. Can you offer any positive or constructive feedback regarding delivery? (i.e. vocal, physical)
3. Can you offer any positive or constructive feedback regarding the use and/or the presentation of visual aids?
4. Can you offer any positive or constructive feedback regarding teamwork? (i.e. consistency, cohesiveness of the presentation, presenters)
5. Did you feel the presenters accomplished their task. (i.e. Is the audience adequately updated?)

How you are graded for presentations
Main Criteria:

1. did you present (if you don’t present the entire semester, you will get a zero)
2. did you put any effort into your presentation
   1. are you trying to follow good presentation
   2. did you practice
   3. did you prepare thoughtful content for your presentation
      1. is this content at the right level
         1. no long pages of equations
         2. no need to belabor unimportant matters
         (remember you only have a short time, so communicate what’s important)
3. have you shown improvement
4. have you communicated/coordinated with your team, so that the presentation is coherent
   1. is the presentation balanced (reasonable pockets of time for all topics & presenters)?
   2. is the appearance of your presentation consistent?
   3. are your transitions good
   4. does your preview and review list what was covered in the presentation

Grades for those who present will span from 60 (poor/lacking effort &/or no improvement) to 100 (shows effort and improvement). Those who do not present will receive a zero for this grade (their entire presentation grade).

First Update Presentation

For the first presentation of the Fall Semester, I would like each team simply to have as the focus of their presentation to explain to the Teaching Team what your project is about, what’s great with your project, and what you’ll be focusing your energy on. Pretend your audience is a group of undergrads from another University, combined with a group of corporate sponsors. That is, you can not rely that they will have the same technical knowledge that you do and don’t know anything about your project.

Only two people should present in this 1st presentation since it is so short.

You must include:

• Intro Slide
• Outline Slide
• Problem definition
• Main customer requirements
• What’s cool about your design
• What you will focus your team’s design efforts on vs. what you’ll buy
• Summary slide
• Time: 6–8 minutes (you will get a warning at 6 minutes that you have 2 minutes remaining).
• Please bring 2 hardcopies of you presentation to class when you present to give Andy and Dr. Provancher. I suggest you put 4 or 6 slides per page on your printouts.

Second Presentation

• Main emphases: BenchMarking & Identify Critical Function Prototype(s)

Your presentation should include:

• BenchMarking related to your project (especially cool stuff you found that you may use). (spend at least 1/2 your time on this)
  • These should include designs you can adapt from outside your immediate project area (e.g., Mini Baja would probably want to look at ATVs, snowmobiles, dune buggies…)
• Please describe what you will present at the next update presentation as your CriticalFunctionPrototype (CFP). If you are unsure, please present the 2 or 3 options you are considering.
  • Mention your motivation and goals for choosing this CFP what you think you will learn by doing this CFP
• key dates in your schedule (1 slide, no Gannt charts!!!)
  • reference your current progress, whether your ahead or behind on your schedule
  • Include how you are doing on your schedule
  • what is the next thing(s) your team is focusing on?
• Budget (1 slide)
  • how are you doing, spending, projected spending, fund raising…

Content for Second Update Presentation
(The structure or your presentation might look something like this)

• Preview/Outline Slide
• key dates in your schedule (very brief, 1–2 slides)
  • reference your current progress, whether your ahead or behind on your schedule
  • Include how you are doing on your schedule
  • what is the next thing(s) your team is focusing on?
• Budget (1 slide max, very brief)
  • how are you doing, spending, projected spending, fund raising…
• Misc. updates (if you have time, these should be important if you include any)
• BenchMarking related to your project (especially cool stuff you found that you may use). (spend at least 1/2 your time on this)
  • These should include designs you can adapt from outside your immediate project area (e.g., Mini Baja would probably want to look at ATVs, snowmobiles, dune buggies…)
  • Take pictures and label the important things you want to show us
• What will be your team’s Critical Function Prototype (CFP).

• Your main emphasis should be on presenting your CriticalFunctionPrototype (CFP)
  • Review your motivation and goals in choosing this CFP
  • Show the design of your CFP and talk about what you learned
• Other updates
• key dates in your schedule (1–2 slides)
  • reference your current progress, whether your ahead or behind on your schedule
  • Include how you are doing on your schedule
  • what is the next thing(s) your team is focusing on?
• Budget (1 slide)

Content for Third Update Presentation
(The structure or your presentation might look something like this)

• Preview/Outline Slide
• key dates in your schedule (very brief, 1–2 slides)
  • reference your current progress, whether your ahead or behind on your schedule
  • Include how you are doing on your schedule
  • what is the next thing(s) your team is focusing on?

• Describe chosen CFP, reminding audience what you hoped to learn from making it.
  • Bring CFP to class if possible and show audience
  • Describe what you learned, surprises, failures, etc…
  • Take pictures and label the important things you want to show us
• Review/Summary Slide
• Conclusions Slide with contact info
• Time: 8–10 minutes (you will get a warning at 8 minutes that you have 2 minutes remaining).
