Conclusions
The design process is something that should not be taken lightly. This is the time to be strict and ensure that all possible solutions are analyzed. Mindmaps are a great way to document ideas created and will help later on in creating design concepts. The use of selection matrices, with the weight factors far appart, will ensure a big difference in the total scores of each concept, this way the best designs can be chosen. Something as simple as a bracket, still required lots of time for brainstroming, and lots of different ideas came to mind. Only the one that met all of the customer requirements was chosen and it turned out to be a great part. Using CAD software to help design the part also helped visualize how it will fit in the existing geometry, this way parts are drawn to scale allowing the designer to check for clearence and tolerances. COTS parts made it easier to see how the hardware was going to fit and saved time from having to model them. Taking time to come up with desing concepts and a list of metrics that translate all customer requirements will ensure a problem free and efficient way to the final prototype.
