Battery Box Specifications
The requirements set forth by the American Solar Challenge are accompanied with specifications that will satisfy these requirements. The battery box specifications include:
- Battery boxes must fully enclose the batteries.
- The battery boxes must be constructed of non-conductive, electrolyte – resistant materials.
- The cover of the box must be made of the same material as the rest of the box.
- The boxes must not be stacked, but lined in a row.
- The resistance measured between the battery terminals and any part of the solar vehicle chassis shall be greater than 1 mega ohm for applied potentials up to 500 V.
- All sides of the battery boxes (including top) must be marked with 10-mm-high letters marked “Caution: Chemical Hazard” and “High Voltage.”
- Battery boxes must be removable.
- Boxes must be able to hold up to 165 kg of sealed PB-acid batteries.
- Battery system must be ventilated.
- The battery enclosure must have forced ventilation at 280 liters per minute.
