Intermediate and Upper Division Status
Students advancing beyond pre ME status must meet certain requirements to continue in the program:
1. Students must be approved for Intermediate Status to be eligible to take sophomore level courses (2000 up to 2999) in the Mechanical Engineering Program.
2. Students must be approved for Upper Division Status to be eligible to take junior and senior level courses (3000 and above) in Mechanical Engineering.
3. Students transferring from other schools will be considered for admission to intermediate or upper-division status on the same basis as students who have completed all of their course work at the University of Utah. Students must be registered at the University of Utah before applying for either intermediate or upper division status.
Intermediate Status:
Admission to Intermediate Status is based on performance in the freshman-level course work listed below:
- Mathematics 1210, 1220 (Calculus) 4, 4
- Chemistry 1210, 1215 (Gen. Chemistry) 4, 1
- Physics 2210, 2220 (Physics for Engineers) 4, 4
- Writing 2010 (Freshman Composition) 3

- ME EN 1000 (1st Year Design) and 1300 (Statics/Strengths) 3, 4
The grade point average in all completed courses listed above must be at or above the entry GPA (2.50 in spring semester 2004)1, with no individual grade below C-. AP credit and transfer credit are used to compute this average. Contact the Student Services Office for current entry GPA.
All courses must be taken for letter grades, can be repeated only once (the second grade counts). A grade of “W” is treated as having completed the class once. (This rule will be waived only in exceptional circumstances.)

- Completion of all of the following courses:
- Math 1210, 1220, 2210, 2250
- Chemistry 1210, 1215
- Physics 2210, 2220
- ME EN 1000, 1300
- CS 1000
- Completion of at least three of the following courses:
- ME EN 2080, 2300, 2450, 2650
