Undergraduate Admissions

We believe every student who aspires to become an engineer should have an opportunity to attempt to achieve that goal. Consequently, anyone admitted to the University of Utah may designate Mechanical Engineering as a major and begin a program under the Pre-Mechanical Engineering classification.

Minimum Requirements for Incoming Freshman

A Mechanical Engineering degree thus provides many opportunities for rewarding and meaningful careers. It is however, a rigorous and challenging curriculum. For high school students general requirements include:

  • Two years of algebra
  • Courses in geometry and trigonometry
  • Calculus (strongly recommended)
  • One year each of physics and chemistry (including laboratory work in both courses)
  • Four years of English

Beyond these core requirements, high school students are encouraged to take:

  • Biology
  • Mechanical drawing/ drafting
  • Computer courses

As today's global economy is creating exciting engineering career opportunities in other countries, the study of a foreign language is highly recommended.
