Each year, various universities contacted my employer requesting that the company participate in their summer intern programs. This year, 2005, MPTS group participated in the program and hosted two mechanical engineering students for two months. These two students were put through the same pace as a new process engineer joining the company.

The two summer interns had opportunities many of the following tasks.

• Learn and practice high-precision manufacturing methods.
• Participate in trial runs of MPTS engineering training program where they are certified, to the level of process engineers, in certain microsystems packaging operations.
• Write, translate, and edit ISO 9001 compliant documents for actual optoelectronic products.
• Participate in conference calls with overseas customers.
• Participate in conference calls with overseas customers.
• Concentrate or specialize in any process or operation of their choosing.
• Design and conduct engineering experiments for troubleshooting and yield improvement via Design of Experiments and Statistical Process Control processes.
• Gain first-hand experience in everyday-operation of a manufacturing facility.
