Student advising
Sirindhorn Int. Institute of Technology

Part of teaching duty at SIIT included advising students. These included giving advices on official and, at times, unofficial matters depending on circumstances. The following were some of the duties I performed.
  • Advising students on course selections and planning.
  • Graduation audits.
  • Advising students on postgraduate studies and career choices. Making available US college rankings and information to students.
  • Communicating with instructors in other departments regarding class that may be of interest to students.
  • Communicating with course instructors regarding student's special circumstance, i.e., grade, illness, family problem, etc.
  • Counseling students on family problem.
  • Counseling parents on student's problem, medical or otherwise.
  • Directing parents to focus on welfare of the student.
  • Hospital visits.
  • Advising parents on student's progress, problem, limitation, etc.
  • Directing students and parents toward more appropriate curriculum, career choice, etc.
  • Deflecting parents attempt to parley student-advisor relationship for their commercial gain.

In addition to direct advising duties, there were other student-related activities that I performed such as:

  • Served as a member of an ad hoc committee on Improvement of Students' English Skills. This committee was formed when some students complained that my English was too "American" for them to understand.
  • Served briefly as a member of the Graduate Committee of SIIT.
  • Served as a member of the Japanese Relation Committee. One of the main responsibilities of the members of this committee was to coordinate summer training in Japan for students.
  • Be a general cheerleader. Lending support to students performing extracurricular activities such as inter-institute sports, robotics competition, graduation ceremony, etc.
  • Served as a chaperon on occasional off-campus student activities student activities.
