Curriculum Flowcharts Development
Sirindhorn Int. Institute of Technology

At SIIT, adjustments in the curriculum had occurred every year in the past 5+ years. This made it difficult to schedule courses for the administrator. To further compound the problem, students were required to follow the curriculum in place in the year that they were admitted not the year that they planned to graduate. Student would have a difficult time planning their course of study because their course requirements may not match subsequent adjustment in the curriculum. Even though the concept of curriculum flowchart was not new, it was not a familiar concept, nor implemented at SIIT until I introduced it.

Curriculum flowcharts were created initially as a student-advising tool to help them visualize their educational plan. Once in use, other benefits became obvious. The charts:
  • aid in course scheduling and planning;
  • aid students in developing their education plan;
  • help identify inconsistencies and conflicts in existing curriculum plans;
  • help identify imbalance in the curriculum where one class is a prerequisite to too many classes; and
  • well accepted by students.

The charts were used informally prior to and, at the departmental level, in academic year 2003. There was a discussion of institute-wide implementation of the curriculum flowcharts starting academic year 2004.
