Show case of students' works
Sirindhorn Int. Institute of Technology

Students at SIIT had very few opportunities to present their work other than their senior project presentations. Even then, the presentation of their work consisted of in-class presentations with few faculty members present. This resulted in stagnation of students' output quality. Students never received the benefit of exposure to work done by others who went through the program before them.

The problem was remedied by giving students outlet to present their works in public settings via the following actions.
  • Assigned projects/assignments where students knew beforehand that their projects would be shown publicly.
  • Structured certain classes as "on the job" learning to produce professional, presentable work.
  • Assigned conference-poster-type or exhibit-type assignments that would be on public display.
  • Set up competition-type projects to be carried out in public venue.
  • Slowly pushed for more open, more public senior design presentations.

The actions produced the following results.

  • Improvement in quality of students' works when they knew beforehand that their works would be on public display.
  • Students were more enthusiastic when the class was not structured as all book learning.
  • Students had exposure to different form of presentations.
  • More time and effort were willingly spent on assignments. As many as 3 or 4 iterations were made for a given design assignment.
  • Students appeared to enjoy showing off their work publicly.
  • First ever, open to public, booth-type display, Senior Design Day jointly staged by two departments at SIIT.

What I had planned was to work quietly toward having the Senior Design Day turned into an annual, institute-wide event. Such events would allow younger students opportunity to experience engineering works more intimately. It would also serve as a promotional tool for the institute as well. As of now, the tradition of holding a Senior Design Day continues, at least, in the Mechanical Engineering Department at SIIT.
