The Department of Mechanical Engineering is excited to welcome Dr. Erik Andersen as an Assistant Professor (Lecturer) this fall. Dr. Andersen is ME alum and is returning to the department to teach the next generation of engineers.
Dr. Andersen earned his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Utah. His doctoral research was completed in Dr. Shad Roundy’s lab, where he focused on wireless power for small biomedical implants. His goal from the outset of the Ph.D program was to be a lecturer or teaching professor. After graduation, he joined Arizona State University as a teaching professor.
“I gained experience teaching a wide variety of courses,” said Dr. Andersen. “My favorite subjects to teach were system dynamics and statistics. I am currently exploring ways to improve engineering education while making effective teaching practices more manageable for instructors. I want to develop and evaluate methods that improve student learning without creating a significant increase in course preparation or logistical demands.”
In his spare time, Dr. Andersen enjoys skiing, reading, and both watching and playing basketball.
“Returning to Utah makes it much easier to attend Jazz games,” said Dr. Andersen. “I am excited to return to my alma mater and hope to provide students with the same high-quality education that enabled me to pursue and achieve my dream career.”
