Dr Pania NewellEach year, the University of Utah recognizes the achievements of exceptional faculty members in teaching, research, mentorship and service. This year, Dr. Pania Newell of the Department of Mechanical Engineering was recognized with the John G. Francis Prize for Undergraduate Student Mentoring, highlighting her commitment to students.

Below is an excerpt from Dr. Newell’s nomination letter.

“Professor Pania Newell exemplifies the ideals of the John G. Francis Prize through her extraordinary mentoring efforts, sustained programmatic impact, documented mentoring record and unwavering commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment. Her mentorship spans undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, first-generation Ph.D. students and international trainees, reflecting her belief that mentorship knows no borders. She is an invaluable asset to the College of Engineering and the University of Utah.”

Dr. Newell also shared her thoughts on receiving the award and the importance of mentorship.

“I am deeply honored to be a recipient of the John G. Francis Prize for Undergraduate Student Mentoring at the University of Utah,” said Dr. Newell. “I am sincerely grateful to my nominator and to those who took the time to write letters in support of my nomination. Their confidence and trust in my work mean a great deal to me. Mentorship has played a defining role in my own journey. The guidance, encouragement, and examples set by my mentors have shaped who I am today and continue to influence how I grow as an educator and researcher. This recognition reflects not only my efforts, but also the lasting impact of those who invested in me. I am grateful for the opportunity to pay that forward by supporting and mentoring the next generation of students.”
