The 2023 ME Student Photo Competition IS HERE!

Share your culture, identity, and passion for photography in an opportunity to add some color to the Mechanical Engineering Kennecott Building!

The 2023 Mechanical Engineering Student Photo Competition is now live, and submissions will be accepted until February 28, 2023. A grand prize of $200 and three other prizes of $100 each are included! Check all the details below.

WHAT IS IT?

Sponsored by the ME Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee, the SPC 2023 is a photo contest where students, both undergraduates and graduates, are invited to submit one photo that illustrates how their cultures and identities intersect with the field of Engineering.

A judging committee determines which submissions meet the requirements of the competition, ultimately ranking the best five. A public-vote “people’s choice” award will also take place for one best picture. All awarded submissions will be printed and publicly displayed in the MEK Building for the following academic year.

COMMUNITY SUBMISSIONS

Only Mechanical Engineering students (undergraduate or graduate, full- or part-time) are eligible for the monetary awards. However, community-submitted photos are welcome and will compete for honorable mentions and production. Community submissions include those from ME alumni, staff, and faculty.

GENERAL THEME

We are not providing any highly specific guidance nor a narrow definition of what we expect, as we hope to leave room for interpretation and creativity as candidates determine their subjects and overall photographic composition.

In general, we invite candidates to capture a moment where their identities, cultures, and personalities connect or intersect with their careers as engineers or aspiring engineers. Submissions are encouraged to convey the meaning of Engineering, as perceived by the author(s), and highlight activities or moments that leverage the skillset of an engineer: problem solving, critical thinking, studying, learning, creating, designing, innovating, improving, leading, collaborating, and shaping their communities.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Candidates shall observe and comply with the requirements below:

  • Each submission shall include a single photo (submitted by a single author or a group of up to 3 authors) and a short 50-word (max) sentence describing or adding context to the moment captured in the photo.
  • Photos shall be in landscape format, have a minimum resolution of 12 megapixels, and 4:3 aspect ratio.
  • No editing other than color correction allowed. Photos must represent the “real world.”
  • No computer-generated submissions are allowed.
  • Submissions that include recognizable individuals must be accompanied by their explicit written authorization and consent to be photographed for purposes of this competition. You will be contacted by the organizing committee with these forms if this requirement applies to your submitted work.
  • Authors must declare that no intellectual property is being captured without the authorization of its owners.
  • Offensive or politically motivated materials are not allowed and will be automatically disqualified.

EVALUATION COMMITTEE AND PEOPLE’S CHOICE

The five best submissions will be determined by an evaluation committee of 6 members, including:

  • 2 members of the ME EDI Committee
  • 1 member of the ME staff
  • 1 member of the ME faculty
  • 2 members of the ME student body (non-competing)

One best “people’s choice” will be determined based on the results of an open electronic poll distributed to the ME community. It is possible that the same submission be given an award by the committee and the broader ME community, as these two awarding processes are independent.

AWARDS AND AWARDING PROCESS

  • All monetary awards are in US dollars:
  • First place: $200.00
  • Second place: $100.00
  • Third place: $100.00
  • Fourth and fifth places: honorable mention only, no monetary award
